I took off this am in a very dreary, rain-spattered morning, not expecting to see much, and certainly not expecting to photograph with so little sunlight, but sometimes you just get lucky.  I visited a park in Pembroke (Pembroke Herring run) and caught a hot spot of warblers, but it was just too dark to do much except for this one Yellow Warbler which more or less  cooperated.  Then on to Daniel Webster Sanctuary in Marshfield, where I got the Wood Duck and Green Heron, as well as the Canadian Goose chicks.  The Song Sparrow, Tufted Titmouse, Red-Winged Blackbird, and Downy were all at the feeders in the Sancuary.  But that Green Heron.......!!

Great trip to NC for 10 days.   I played in the Brevard College Wind Ensemble, played a prelude and post lude at Don's church, subbed in his quintet for a rehearsal, rehearsed and performed in our arrnaged brass Festival at Mom's church (Brevard-Davidson River P.C.), with great help from 13 other brass players, Charlie Steele, the organist, and Jamie Haffner who conducted.  I read trios with Don and tim Bryson, accompaning Sylvia, diva of divas, and got to play a master class at Furman University. I also travelled to Triple Falls, High Falls, Hooker Falls, and with the generous help of Tom English, got to Maidenhair Falls for the first time in probably 20 or even 30 years. Driving to church (Maundy Thursday) I stopped right in the middle of a road, as this beauty was hanging over the road obviously intent on something in the field to the left.  I got out of the car, but he refused to fly, so intent upon he (she) was at watching what ever caught his (her) eye.  I ran out of time, and had to leave, but I love the photo results.  Enjoy.

Jan 31 Snowy Owl

I hoped to see one at Parker River Sanc.and here he is!  H was about a mile away, but at least I have him, and in the scope he was magnificent!  Only the second one I have seen.

Bird in Westerly, RI

I did my annual trip to Westerly to play with the brass in the pit for the "12th. Night" performances, (a bit sad, George Kent's final 12th nt), and went down to Watch Hill to birdwatch.  Two photos from that trip, a hawk (Cooper's?) and a Surf Scoter. 

Bluebird

Strange birding.  The yard is totally without a bird for several days, and then for about 15 minutes, I have Rebellied, Downy, Chipping, Junco, Cardinal, Goldfinch, and the return of a bluebird. Here he is.

New Year's day birds

As is my usual practice, I got up at 5:00 AM on New Years day and drove to Provincetown, where I did my first birdwatching for the year.  I found 39 species to start the year, including these two, one is a horned grebe in winter garb, and the other is a hawk which I am not sure about, probably a Cooper's. Any suggestions?
