New Year's day birds

As is my usual practice, I got up at 5:00 AM on New Years day and drove to Provincetown, where I did my first birdwatching for the year.  I found 39 species to start the year, including these two, one is a horned grebe in winter garb, and the other is a hawk which I am not sure about, probably a Cooper's. Any suggestions?

  1. Doug - This looks like our cooper's hawk which entertains us in the Nat Geo World Wild fashion while we also dine a few feet away on the screened porch.

  2. Thank you, Jane in Avondale. That's a great hawk to start the year. Now, if I can just see some owls this year....
