A wonderful way to start the birding year. I left Middleboro at 5:00 AM to drive to Cape Cod, and out to the very end, Race Point, for the first birding of 2025. My son Scott, and grandson Carter came along, which was fantastic.
It was bitterly cold, about 7 degrees, and we could only get out of the car for a few minutes at a time.
I had my wonderful heated hoodie (thank you, Cheryl), and that was a godsend.

We arrived at the visitor center in the dunes and watched the sunrise over Provincetown. |
|
From there we drove over to the Race Point beach and walked down to see what was there. And I was thrilled to spy a Northern Gannet! I knew they could be seen here, but in the many years I have been here, I have never seen one. My last sighting of a Gannet was in Newfoundland in 2011. |

The bird was an enormous distance away, but there was at least enough light to see the details needed to identify this great bird. |

Back down in Provincetown, along the shore. |

It was so great to have these guys along. |

At Wellfleet Harbor. Scott hoped to fly his drone, but the wind was just too high. |

Greater Scaup |

Looking from First Encounter beach back towards Wellfleet, and a good image of the high winds. |

Taken from the cliffs at Manomet out at the Atlantic, and a ship on the very horizon
