Villa Borghese

We can thank Sally for insisting we see the Borghese.  Those in the know (like Sally) know that this gallery with its incredible collection of Bernini, Caravaggio and marbles is one of the must visits in Rome.  One of the most lavish galleries I have ever seen, its walls, ceilings and antechambers all are covered with art and decoration on a scale only the incredibly wealthy could realize.  You could spend a huge amount of time in each and every room, there is so much to discover.

It was incredibly hard to delete enough art photos and still represent this stunning place.  I hope you will be patient with this one!

Thank you, Sally and Neal, for insisting on this.  And as happened so often, we thought of you and your enthusiasm for this place, and so well understood.

And another incredibly beautiful day.  I started the morning by doing a little birding, and
saw quite a few Rose-ringed Parakeets (earlier blog).

And you are presented immediately with beautiful rooms.

Lionello Spada    1576-1622

getting ready to empty his slide?)

You will see a lot of ceilings in the blog.  I love them.

This is a mosaic, done with miniscule stones.  The whole picture is perhaps a foot wide.

Detail of the above!

Abraham Van Cuylenborch   1610-1658
View of the Villa Borghese

Bernini
Rape of Proserpina
It is interesting to read that Bernini, only 23 when he completed this masterpiece, came in for a lot of criticism.  Hard to believe anyone could look at this and see anything other than genius.

Vista out a window.

Bernini
Aeneas, Anchises and Ascanius

Bernini
Truth Unveiled

Roman Art
Ancient torso restored as a satyr on a   dolphin

And finally: Bernini

Perhaps the ultimate marble Baroque work of art.
