Alex and Carter, Battleship Cove, New Bedford Whaling Museum.

Always a great trip, the Battleship Cove contains the battleship USS Massachusetts, the Hiddensee, a cold war era East German missile cruiser, the sub USS Lionfish, and the destroyer USS Joseph P. Kennedy Jr.  The battleship and missile cruiser were closed for inspection, but it was still a great visit, the boys loving especially the submarine.  Since we had time left in the day, we hustled over to New Bedford, and visited the Whaling Museum, which has expanded dramatically, and is a wonderful building with many varied exhibits.

Here are photos from the days outing.

inside the life-size model of a Sperm Whale's heart!

This boat was used in the last whaling voyage of a New Bedford whaler in 1927.

This is a half-size replica of the whaling ship "Lagoda" the largest ship model in existance.

The largest and most exceptional scrimshaw collection I have ever seen.
This is only one case of an entire room devoted to ivory carving.

Alex's favorite exhibit

I include a few photos of a remarkable exhibit at the whaling museum, art of
William Shattuck, description below.
