Portland trip with Susan Blog 1 Peaks Island

Susan and I took an overnight up to Portland, Me. mostly because I enjoyed the trip with Louis Stewart (previous blog).  This will be one of several blogs on the trip.

Waiting in the terminal before boarding the Ferry.  Masks still mandated in terminal, on inside areas of Ferry

A beautiful day before the arrival of tropical rainstorm Elsa.

On the Island.

Local artists have art carts, with honor-system purchasing.

An enormous snapping turtle crossing the road.  About two feet long.

The Fifth of Maine Regiment museum.  Although only one Peaks Island person joined the regiment, the building was built as an annual gathering place for the Maine veterans.

In the Peaks Island history exhibit, the fortifications on the island during WW2 included the
largest canon ever installed in an island fort, 16" canon usually installed on a battleship.

Showing the breech of the canon, and preparing to fire.

A 16" shell hitting a target.

Returning to Portland

We had a very interesting dinner experience.  My GPS took us to what I thought was a Italian restaurant, but instead we found ourselves in a new African-Rwandan restaurant.  It was obvious they
catered almost exclusively to an African clientele, but they made us feel right at home, explained the menu, and Susan had chicken (the whole thing!), and I had a huge hunk of salmon, both covered in some kind of white sauce with onions and mushrooms, which was absolutely delicious.
Damas Rugaba was our host, and although there was zero atmosphere in the bare room, no deserts (Africans evidently don't eat deserts), and the white wine wasn't chilled, it was still a very unique, and delightful experience, mostly because Damas was such a kind host.

I think Susan's chicken was less successful than my salmon.
